Camera insurance for photography equipment
Cameras and lenses can add up to a sizeable investment, whether photography is your job, a serious hobby or simply something you enjoy. A camera insurance policy can protect specified equipment against selected risks that may not be fully covered by ordinary home insurance.
The important bit is to insure the right equipment for the right value and to understand where cover applies. Check the policy wording, excesses, security conditions and exclusions rather than choosing on price alone.
What can camera insurance cover?
Depending on the options you choose, a specialist policy may cover:
- Accidental damage to insured cameras, lenses and accessories.
- Theft, subject to the policy’s security and evidence requirements.
- Accidental loss if this optional cover is selected.
- Worldwide use if you add the appropriate travel option and stay within the permitted trip length.
- Public liability or professional indemnity for photographers who select business-related cover.
Cover is not automatic for every item or situation. Your quote and policy documents will show what is included, what is optional and the excess you would pay if you claim.
Who might find camera insurance useful?
Specialist cover can be useful for amateur photographers, content creators, videographers and professionals. It may be worth considering if you regularly carry valuable kit away from home, work at events or venues, travel with equipment, or own items that exceed your home policy’s single-item limit.
Work out what your kit is worth
Make a simple inventory before you start. Include camera bodies, lenses, lighting, tripods, bags and any other accessories you want to protect. Certain computers, tablets, phones, drones or high-value items may need to be listed separately.
Use the valuation basis requested by the insurer and keep suitable evidence of ownership. That might include receipts, invoices, recent valuations or timestamped photographs showing identifying details. Review the values when you add or replace equipment so that your policy does not fall behind your kit.
Check where and how your equipment is protected
Look carefully at the rules for equipment kept at home, in a studio, in a hotel or inside a vehicle. Theft cover commonly depends on doors and windows being locked, alarms being used where required, and equipment being stored out of sight. Unattended items can have tighter restrictions.
If you take your camera abroad, confirm that worldwide cover is included and that your trip will not exceed the policy limit. Airline baggage rules also matter: some policies treat hand luggage and checked baggage differently.
What camera insurance may not cover
A camera policy is designed for insured events, not routine maintenance. General breakdown, gradual deterioration and wear and tear are normally excluded. Cover can also be restricted where equipment is left unattended, security conditions are not followed, or an activity falls outside the policy terms.
Drone cover, commercial work, public liability and professional indemnity can each have their own limits and exclusions. Select them only where they fit the work you actually do, and read the documents before buying.
Before you start a camera insurance quote
- Have a list of the equipment you want to insure and an up-to-date value for each item.
- Decide whether you need UK-only or worldwide cover.
- Think about accidental loss, hired equipment and business-related cover rather than assuming they are included.
- Check the evidence-of-ownership and security requirements.
- Compare the excess, limits and exclusions alongside the premium.
The linked camera insurance is available to eligible UK residents aged 18 or over and is offered as an annual policy. Eligibility and cover are confirmed during the quote journey.
