What is cyber insurance?

Cyber insurance is cover for some of the costs a business can face after a cyber attack or data breach. The help you get depends on the policy. It might include expert help, the cost of getting systems working again, or claims from people whose data was affected.

It does not stop an attack from happening. You still need simple steps such as strong passwords, two-step sign-in, updates and backups.

Could my business need it?

You do not need a big office to face a cyber risk. It may be worth looking at cover if you:

  • take bookings or payments online;
  • keep customer names, addresses or other private details;
  • send invoices by email;
  • sell through a website; or
  • run your business from a laptop at home.

Think about what would happen if you could not use your accounts or files for a few days. Check your current business policy too. It may already include some cyber cover.

What kinds of cyber cover are there?

The names can be confusing. These are common things to ask about when you compare policies:

  • Hacked accounts and ransomware: Help to respond if someone gets into your systems or locks your files.
  • Lost or stolen data: Help after customer or business information is exposed.
  • Time you cannot work: Cover for some lost income or extra costs while you recover.
  • Claims from others: Help if a customer makes a claim after their data is affected. This is often called cyber liability.
  • Money taken by fraud: Some policies offer this, but others do not. Check the wording before you rely on it.

You may hear the terms cyber security insurance, data breach insurance and cyber liability insurance. They can mean different things with different insurers. Check what a policy covers, rather than buying by its name alone.

What should I check before I buy?

Ask whether the policy covers the events that worry you most. Look at the amount it could pay, what you would pay towards a claim, and any limits or exclusions. Check what help is available straight after an attack. Tell the insurer how you use email, websites, customer data and work devices, including those you use at home.

Is cyber insurance required by law?

There is no general UK law saying that every business must buy cyber insurance. A customer or contract may still ask you to have it. Good security and careful handling of personal data matter whether you buy cover or not.

How much does cyber insurance cost?

The price depends on your business, the data you hold, the cover you choose and the safety steps you have in place. A quote can show the options available for your own business.
