Hire-and-reward insurance is the class of motor use needed when you are paid to carry somebody else’s food, parcels or other goods. Temporary cover may be available for eligible car or van work lasting 1–28 days.

Key facts about this temporary route

  • Duration: this is the 1–28-day route; the quote shows the exact minimum and available period for the selected vehicle.
  • UK connection: GoShorty’s published eligibility information says the applicant needs a permanent UK address and the insured journey must start and end in the UK.
  • Use: paid parcel, food or grocery delivery needs carriage-of-goods-for-hire-and-reward cover.
  • Goods carried: the motor policy does not insure the value of food, parcels or other goods in the vehicle.
  • Eligibility: driver, vehicle, work and underwriting rules apply; a quote is not a guarantee of acceptance.

What carriage of goods for hire and reward means

A vehicle is being used for hire and reward when its driver receives payment or another reward for transporting goods belonging to somebody else. Examples include parcel rounds, takeaway delivery, grocery delivery and paid multi-drop courier work.

What hire and reward is not

Social, domestic and pleasure use

Private vehicle use does not normally permit paid deliveries.

Ordinary business use

Driving to meetings or different workplaces is not the same as carrying customers’ goods for payment.

Carriage of own goods

A tradesperson carrying their own tools, stock or materials needs carriage-of-own-goods cover, not courier hire and reward.

Taxi or private-hire work

Transporting passengers for payment is a different risk and is not covered by this temporary courier branch.

Road cover and cargo cover are separate

Hire-and-reward motor insurance permits the insured vehicle to be used for the delivery activity described in its documents. It does not insure the value of the goods being transported. Goods in Transit insurance is separate and may be required by a courier, platform or commercial contract.

How temporary periods work

This route is for cover lasting 1–28 days. The exact available minimum, start and finish appear during the quote and in the certificate and schedule. Temporary cover may suit an occasional shift, seasonal demand, a trial period or a short contract, but it must not be used beyond its expiry time.

Eligibility and territorial limits

GoShorty’s published eligibility information says the applicant needs a permanent UK address and the insured journey must start and end in the UK. Driver, licence, vehicle, claims, conviction and other underwriting criteria apply. Do not assume that any permission for driving abroad also permits commercial deliveries outside the UK.

Choose the correct vehicle route

Need longer-term hire-and-reward cover?

This branch is for cover lasting no more than 28 days. If you need courier insurance for 29 days or more, return to the courier insurance options and choose the ongoing-cover route.

Temporary courier insurance FAQs

Is hire-and-reward cover needed for paid delivery work?

If you are paid to deliver somebody else’s goods, your motor insurance must permit that use. Standard private, commuting or ordinary business cover does not normally do so.

Is hire and reward the same as Goods in Transit insurance?

No. Hire and reward concerns permitted vehicle use and road risks. Goods in Transit insurance protects the value of items being carried.

Does temporary hire and reward include private driving?

The available quote route may combine social, domestic and pleasure use with carriage of goods for hire and reward. The certificate and schedule determine the actual permitted uses.

Is carrying my own work equipment hire and reward?

No. Carrying your own tools, stock or materials is generally carriage of own goods. Select the class of use that accurately matches the work.

Does the vehicle need an underlying annual policy?

Public product information does not provide one universal answer for every courier quote. Check the eligibility declaration and chosen policy documents, and do not assume temporary cover replaces all other insurance outside its stated period.

Where should I go for 29 days or more?

Return to the courier insurance options and choose ongoing cover.
