What is salon insurance?

Salon insurance is a name for cover you can choose to fit your work. It is not one fixed policy. You may need cover for accidents involving clients, the treatments you give, your tools and products, and people who work for you. What is included depends on the insurer and the policy.

Is this for the work I do?

Salon cover may be useful for hairdressers, barbers, nail technicians, beauty therapists and people who offer lash or brow treatments. It can also matter if you work from home, visit clients, rent a chair or own a salon.

Tell the insurer every service you offer. Hair colouring, acrylic nails and skin treatments can bring different risks. Tattooing, piercing, laser work, injectables and sunbeds need particular care: do not assume a general salon or public liability policy covers them. Ask whether your exact work is accepted before you buy.

What cover could I choose?

  • Public liability: For some claims if a client or visitor is hurt, or their property is damaged, because of your business.
  • Treatment cover: For some claims linked to a service you carry out. Check which treatments are named in the policy.
  • Tools, stock and equipment: To help replace items after an event the policy covers, such as theft or damage.
  • Business premises: If you have a salon, check what cover you need for the building and what is inside it.
  • Employers' liability: For claims from staff who are hurt or become ill because of their work. Most UK employers must have this cover.

Some policies also offer help if an insured event means you cannot trade for a time. Each type of cover may have its own limit, conditions and extra cost.

Do I need cover if I work from home or rent a chair?

You may still need your own business cover. Home insurance or the salon owner's policy may not cover your work, treatments or kit. If you travel to clients, check whether your tools and treatments are covered away from your usual workplace.

Is salon insurance required by law?

There is no single insurance rule for every salon. Most UK employers need employers' liability cover. Your council, landlord or clients may also ask for other cover, including public liability. If you are unsure whether someone working with you counts as an employee, or what your local rules require, check before you buy.

How much does salon insurance cost?

The price depends on your services, where you work, your team, your equipment and the cover you choose. Be clear about your work when you ask for a quote so the options fit your business.

Ready to see your options?

Use the quote form to tell the provider about your business. If a treatment you offer is not listed, ask whether it can be covered. Check the policy details before you buy.
